MBABANE – The count down to the 2020 Summer Olympics Games has already begun. It is 153 days to go for the Olympics games which will be held in Tokyo in Japan. Nations have already selected squads to the games and Eswatini is no exception.

Yesterday, Eswatini Olympic Commonwealth Games Association CEO Sidney Simelane with the association President Peter Shongwe announced a provisional team to the global games.
The XXXII (32nd) Olympiad Edition will be held from July 24 to August 9. This marks exactly 56-years after the Japanese capital hosted a summer edition in 1964.

The team to Tokyo 2020 will be led by Eswatini Boxing National Association and EOCGA vice-president Pearl Dlamini.
Given the authority to announce her team, Dlamini disclosed that it was a provisional squad. The squad include three athletes, two boxers, two swimmers and two Taekwondo artists.

The athletes are sprinter Sibusiso’Swazibolt’ Matsenjwa, Phumlile Ndzinisa and Andile Lusenga while the boxers are Thabiso Dlamini and Zweli Dlamini. Swimmers in Simanga Dlamini and Robyn Young are among the provisional squad while Taekwondo artists in Wandile Maziya and Saneliso Masuku are also part of the list.

“Firstly I would like to thank EOCGA for once again entrusting me with leading the team to Tokyo 2020. They have made the right choice in chosing a woman who will take proper care of all the athletes,” said Dlamini.

“It must be mentioned though that this is a provisional squad. This means this is not a final squad; other athletes also stand a chance to be part of the Tokyo 2020 delegation.  We urge association to also flood us with potential candidates who can have a competitive edge globally,” Dlamini said.
She went on to explain the criteria which was used to select the tentative squad.

“We had to consider the performance, and off course those with scholarships programes and their ranking internationally. We felt the one we have selected would do the country proud in the Tokyo 2020. But it must be mention that they have not qualified yet as they have to undergo qualifiers games before they secure their spot to the Olympics Summer Games,” she said.

He went on to mention that some are already hard at training preparing for the qualifiers games.
“As we speak Sibusiso, Phumlile are in Pretoria where they have been hard at training while Thabiso and Zweli are in Senegal with Wandile and Saneliso in Morocco also gearing up for the qualifiers,” she said.

She also highlighted that the athletes stand a good chance of qualifying as there were more than one game which were used as qualifying slots.
