MBABANE – The international participation ban by the Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council (ESRC) following the coronavirus outbreak is already hitting hard on sports.

With the sanction announced on Monday, swimmers and golfers have been withdrawn from attending international tournaments that are scheduled for next week. Seven swimmers for Swim Lab swimming club have pulled out from attending the South Africa’s Level National in Newcastle, South Africa.

The swimmers were Hayley Hoy, Tiano Fraser, Kyla Webb, Luca Fraser, Eryn Webb, Damien Desousa and Raya Young. They were all going to the competitions having qualified. Swim Lab Coach Welcome Nhlabatsi said this was disappointing especially for the swimmers as they were eager for the competitions.

“It is beyond everyone’s control and we have to face reality. It is not good for us and the swimmers are really saddened by the latest development as they have worked hard to qualify for the level championship,” he said.

The ban will also affect two swimmers, Simanga Dlamini and Robyn Young who were due to travel to Durban, South Africa for the 2020 Olympics Games Qualifiers.
