MBABANE – The coronavirus outbreak could force the disruption of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers.
The national team, Sihlangu is due to travel to Congo Brazzaville for the first leg on March 26, 2020 before the second leg match on March 30 at the Mavuso Sports Centre.

With the cases on the rise in Africa, countries including Kenya, Gambia, and Comoros have already requested to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to either postpone the games or they won’t honour them.

Congo Brazzaville neighbours DR Congo reported their first case of the virus on Tuesday. It is yet to be determined if the Dominic Kunene-led side will travel to Congo Brazzaville after the sports mother body, Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council (ESRC) abolished an international trip by sporting codes under their auspices.

“We are much well aware of the situation but currently nothing has been confirmed yet and the tournaments we are competing have their rules and regulations and we are going to wait for a correspondence. Currently the team continued with its preparations despite the challenge of uncertainty,’ said Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Marketing and Communications Officer Muzi Radebe.

Gambia coach Tom Saintfiet called for the postponement the qualifiers because of the coronavirus outbreak.
Italy, the most affected European country, is currently on lockdown with all Serie A matches suspended due to the outbreak. This has affected the Gambia national team, which has numerous players based in Italy particularly hard.
The government of Comoros has ordered for the cancellation of the of the AFCON 2021 qualifier against Kenya later this month.

cancelled

The game scheduled for March 31 in Moroni was cancelled in a bid to safeguard the public following the rapid spread of the coronavirus.

The outbreak has largely spared sub-Saharan Africa so far, but since February a few cases have been registered in Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Cameroon, Togo and Burkina Faso. North African countries have registered dozens of cases.
