MBABANE – Sunderland Academy player Khaya Dlamini has joined the fourty-4 push-ups challenge currently keeping taekwondo artists physically fit during the lockdown.

The challenge has now been made open to all interested individuals until May 8 when the lockdown ends in the country if the COVID-19 outbreak is brought under control.

Next Generation Taekwondo Academy Coach Sizwe Mabuza, who launched the challenge, said it was gaining popularity especially among the sporting people. It started last Wednesday and already there were over 20 participants.
Dlamini is currently safely under lockdown in the United Kingdom, where he resides.

Mabuza said push-ups boost fitness massively, something which is key to a strong body and developing a strong immune system.
“The challenge and its model help us to spread the message about COVID-19 and increase awareness about staying safe and how to avoid catching it. Push-ups are easy to do and can be done anywhere without the need of any equipment,” he said.
The challenge:

Record a video of yourself doing a total of 44 push-ups, could be beginner, intermediate or advanced push-ups). You can do them all at one go or take bits until the video makes 44 in total. Then you copy, edit and paste this post on your own timeline with your video and nominate the next person to do the challenge.
Push-ups Benefits

Upper-body strength:
Push-ups seriously challenge your upper half as you bend your arms lower and lift your entire body. They work your entire upper half, including the front of your chest, both the front and back of your arms, shoulders, and upper back.

2. Core strength and stability:
They work different joints and muscles simultaneously.  A big part of that total-body work includes core strength and stability. When performed correctly, push-ups are a great way to stabilise and strengthen your core.

3. Cardio challenge:
Push-ups also double as cardio as the heart and lungs will likely start to pump faster, and you may feel out of breath. Depending on your fitness level, you may not need to bust out a bunch of reps to get to this point. A set of 10 push-ups, for example, may be enough.  So to increase heart and lung strength push-ups may be used to develop cardio vascular capacity.

4. Bone density:
Push-ups are a weight-bearing move, so they can also promote good bone health. Weight-bearing exercises can help build strong bones and slow bone loss.
NB: One of the effects of Covid-19 is build-up of mucus around the lungs, weak lungs and a weak heart, which would easily give up in this situation yet a stronger lung would keep pumping thus enabling the alveoli to stay open and the patient able to breathe unassisted.
