ATHLETES TURN TO REFUSE BAGS
MBABANE – Athletes are using refuse bags as part of their training kit. Mbabane Highlanders midfielder Mlamuli ‘Mlaba’ Nkambule is among the footballers who wear the refuse bag underneath their training kits.
He said this helped him to sweat a lot while going about his training routine.
“We are aware that the refuse bag is not for training and to try and make it safe I open some small holes and in that way it serves the purpose of making me sweat a lot.
“I believe that sweating a lot is good for my body and physical fitness,” he said.
Another athlete who trains in these is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games bound taekwondo artist, Wandile Maziya.
Attempt
“Wearing the refuse bag is an attempt to lose weight.
“The refuse bag helps my body or limbs increase the amount of sweat during the workouts.
“Holding in the sweat keeps your body temperature higher, increasing the level of sweating and that is my reason for using it,” he said.
Meanwhile, according to heatyhway.com, wearing the refuse bag during training can cause increased loss of weight through water loss, but can also lead to dehydration and impaired physical performance.
“Wearing a trash bag short-circuits part of your body’s cooling process. The trash bag prevents the sweat from evaporating, signalling the body to keep producing sweat in the hopes of lowering your body temperature. In this manner, the trash bag causes weight loss from water loss.
“Weight loss attributed to water weight is only temporary and is also dangerous to your health. Gains can be expected once you rehydrate or eat.
“Because water is vital to many different body systems and functions, it’s not recommended to attempt to lose weight in this manner,” reads healthyway.com
Athletes have been forced to continue with training individually in the country after the coronavirus outbreak in mid-March.
