EVERESTING 4 SAWS RAISES E100 000
MBABANE – Inyatsi Swazi Frontier cyclists Brett Foss and Ian McLeod are heroes.
The duo assisted in raising E100 000 for the Swaziland Animal Welfare Society (SAWS) during the Everesting fundraiser hosted by Inyatsi Swazi Frontier MTB. The duo, joined by other cyclists on August 29, 2020, successfully attempted to ride the equivalent height of Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain at 8 848m.
Inyatsi Swazi Frontier’s Lesley Foss confirmed the E100 000 raised during the Everesting event.
SAWS attends to stray, abandoned, injured and abused animals but has limited funds for this work. It conducts public information campaigns to educate the public about the importance of vaccinating animals against the deadly rabies infection and also sterilisation to reduce the numbers of unwanted animals.
They also operate community outreach programmes in conjunction with government vets, community members and Waterford Kamhlaba UWC students where it treats animals for minor ailments, deworming and rabies vaccinations and some clinics include sterilisation too.
“Its staff may have to drive long distances to collect animals that have been reported and bring them back to the safety of its kennels in Mbabane or Manzini to treat them. In addition to medicines, it must ensure that all animals in its care have enough food and fresh water at all times. And then SAWS has to try to find new loving forever homes for these animals. SAWS also offers dog grooming and kennelling services as a means of generating income,” Smith said.
She said anyone interested in supporting or motivating them in their attempt was encouraged to make a donation to SAWS (Standard Bank Swaziland, Mbabane branch, code 663164, account 9110000789871, reference “EVERESTING + your name”).
