MANZINI – Eswatini legendary football player Sibusiso ‘Spoko’ Dlamini has finally lifted the ABSA Premiership Cup – years after retiring from the game.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows striker, who retired in May 2014 after 18 years of football, lifted this prestigious Cup yesterday at Manzini Club Sports Ground. It was being paraded during the treble celebration organised by the Mamelodi Sundowns’ Eswatini Supporters branch.

Dlamini announced his retirement after playing his last game for the MTN National First Division outfit, Mhlambanyatsi Rovers, on May 6, 2014.

“I am proud to say that I am the only liSwati football player to have played for Mamelodi Sundowns. I only got 15 minutes of play in two years and I am honoured to lift the Absa Cup after retirement. Thank you to the club President, Patrice Motsepe, for giving us this unique opportunity,” said Dlamini.

He joined Sundowns in 1999 and also played for Black Leopards, Chiefs, Swallows and Mpumalanga Black Aces, in a career that spanned for 11 years in South African football.

Dlamini encouraged Eswatini players to pursue their dreams and hoped to see more players from the kingdom making a secured career at Sundowns. He further acknowledged the club’s charitable spirit as they continue to help the needy and their support for young talent.

“Mamelodi Sundowns is a good family. I love the continuous charity work by the supporters and the management. My dream is for Sundowns to start an academy in Eswatini, where they will produce a pool of talented young players,” said Dlamini.

Dlamini thanked the club’s president for giving him a once-in-a-life-time opportunity and a meaty salary back in the days.

“I started earning good money at Mamelodi Sundowns. My first pay cheque was E2 500 and that was huge money. I will forever be grateful,” said Dlamini.
