SA’S SANGWENI SET FOR ‘BULL’ CAPTAINCY
MBABANE – Former Orlando Pirates’ midfielder Thamsanqa Sangweni is earmarked to lead Eswatini giants, Mbabane Highlanders, as Captain in the 2020/21 season.
Sangweni, who has already agreed terms with the black and white side of Mbabane and even attended training until he had to attend to an issue back home this week, is said to have impressed the management, patrons and directorship with his leadership skills.
“Sangweni is going to add so much as a player and a leader because the players have great respect for him given his professionalism and Orlando Pirates status. He has also shown some very good leadership qualities,” said an official of the club on condition of anonymity.
A few days after the official had said this, it has emerged that Sangweni and national team Sihlangu star, Sabelo ‘Sawa’ Gamedze and former Moneni Pirates centre back Mncedisi Dlamini are the front three for the job, but Sangweni will be the main man and the two his deputies. The club’s director, South African businessman Chief Ally Kgomongwe, who recruited Sangweni into the club, was also reached for comment on the matter.
“Sangweni is an experienced and very professional player who has played at the highest level. We’re still to sit and finalise it with the technical bench and MC, but yes, we’re looking at Sangweni and Sawa as well as Mncendisi to lead as captains,” Kgomongwe said.
However, he made it clear that this was yet to be finalised as the midfielder was also yet to be unveiled as one of the club’s players for the new season scheduled to kick-off on December 12, a few weeks from now.

The team was captained by Jimoh Moses last season, but he was transferred a few months ago. He is reportedly one of the players Manzini Wanderers are expected to sign. Others who wore the captain’s armband were his deputies Mlamuli ‘Mlaba’ Nkambule and Gamedze ‘Sawa’. Meanwhile, the club’s PRO Paul ‘Magidz’eludzakeni’ Masilela and Assistant Coach/Trainer Siyabonga Bhembe did not hide their admiration for the defender and the rest of the South Africans they brought to assess for signing. It was not just about performance for Sangweni, but also his leadership skills as they spoke highly of it.
Should Sangweni become the captain on arrival in the club, it will be the same scenario as that of former Bidvest Wits star, Thulani Hlatshwayo, when he joined South Africa’s Soweto giants Orlando Pirates this season – he became a captain.
