JOY AS UNDER-20S BEAT ANGOLA IN COSAFA OPENER
MBABANE – A second half strike by Majahesibili Ndlovu was enough to hand Eswatini a perfect start in their COSAFA Under 20 Championship opening clash against Angola yesterday.
This was during the first game of Group C, where Eswatini scored the winner at the 77 minutes through the Manzini Wanderers’ striker (Ndlovu).
The game was played behind closed doors at Gelvandale Stadium, Port Elizabeth (PE) in South Africa.
The Velekhaya Mtsetfwa-led local charges will now be hoping to maintain this promising performance when they face Botswana in their second game to be played tomorrow in the same venue at 3:30pm.
The coveted trophy is not only at stake for the Under-20 in this tournament, but a spot in the TOTAL Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), to be held in Mauritania next year, is up for grabs for the winners.
Eswatini is in Group C alongside Angola and Botswana whom they play on Tuesday at 12:30pm at the same venue. The 11 competing countries have been split into three pools, Groups A and B containing four teams.
The top team in each pool will advance to the semi-finals, as well as the best-placed runner-up.
The local squad will be hoping to make a good impression in this competition having failed to at least reach the final in their last 14 attempts. They reached the quarter-finals for the first in 2002.
The team came close last year, earning six points in their pool, but not enough to see them through to the semi-finals when the tournament was played in Zambia.
Best
Their best ever finish was third place all the way back in 1985 when the country hosted the competition. When reached for comment, Mtsetfwa (coach) said he was proud of his boys.
“They really played their hearts out despite that it was a tough game. The opponents dominated the game and even had a penalty with five minutes to spare, but their striker Gastao missed it,” he said. The former Sihlangu assistant coach added that the next game against Botswana was a do-or-die for them, which they must win at all costs to put themselves in a good position to go all the way.
