MBABANE – In what would sound as sweet melody to associations and athletes, The Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA)  has given EOCGA a grant of over E500 000.

The grant from ANOCA  is approximately E570 000  and will be channelled towards project restart of sports that are affiliated with the Eswatini Olympics Commonwealth Games Association(EOCGA) and preparations for the Tokyo 2021 Games. Addressing the press at EOCGA offices in Mbabane on Wednesday, the President, Peter Shongwe, said the grant came when they needed it the most.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our lives in many ways. We have lost loved ones, economies have been adversely impacted, and the way we go about our daily lives has changed drastically to adapt to the ‘new normal,” Shongwe said. He said not a single industry has been spared from this unprecedented change of life. He said this included the beloved sports sector. He highlighted that as a consequence, they witnessed the suspension of major competitions, leagues, events, etc. “This global uncertainty resulted in the postponement of the world’s biggest multi-sport event, the Tokyo 2020 Games, now shifted to 2021,” he said. He highlighted that they were delighted that the IOC and the government of Japan reached a positive conclusion to host the games under safe and secure conditions from July 23 to August 8, 2021,” he said.

He said they welcomed the government’s relaxation of the lockdown regulations. He said particularly, allowing more sport codes to be practised under strict health protocols. “We are happy to announce that we have secured a grant valued at US$15 000- (approximately E220  000) to fund the return to sport of our various associations,” he said. He said support would be enjoyed equally by all national associations that are in good standing. “Therefore, associations are encouraged to apply directly to the EOCGA Secretariat to access the support. The fund must be channelled towards two areas namely COVID-19 risk assessment and back to play programme,” he added.
