MBABANE – For the second time in a row, the country has missed an opportunity of hosting the E1.5 million sponsored Investec Royal Swazi Open.

The tournament sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour will next year again be played at the Gary Player Country Club, Sun City, South Africa due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The events programme released by the Sunshine Tour confirmed that the tournament had already been moved to South Africa. It will be held in October 2021. “Covid-19 and unpredictable travel restrictions mean the Investec Royal Swazi Open will be staged at the Gary Player Country Club in Sun City. This will be the second time in its history that this decision was taken,” reads a statement from investec.com.

This year in October, the Investec Royal Swazi Open, the second oldest golfing tournament in the country, was celebrating its 50th anniversary in the year that Covid-19 all but wiped out competitive sport. The Sunshine Tour announced that it will tee-off 2021 with a strong run of seven tournaments, including three which will be co-sanctioned with the European Challenge Tour. The country has professional players James Pennington competing in the Sunshine Tour, with Nobuhle Dlamini playing under the Sunshine Ladies Tour in the Ladies European Tour.

Winner

South African Cobie Legrange was the first winner of the title, but over the years the Investec Royal Swazi Open has built an impressive list of local and international winners and players.
John O’Leary (Ireland), John Daly (USA), Mark McNulty (Zimbabwe), Ernie Els (South Africa) and Dale Hayes (RSA) stand among them. Interestingly, a liSwati national has only scooped the Investec Royal Swazi (Men’s) Open title once. Paul Friedlander won it in 1998. Joe Dlamini came close in 1990, when he finished second to Jeff Hawkes, together with the legendary American golfer John Daly.
