MBABANE – Former Mhlambanyatsi Rovers striker Mfanzile ‘Fash’ Dlamini has described the late Gcina ‘Magiyane’ Dlamini as a mastermind of football.

Dlamini, interviewed yesterday, said he was still shattered by the news of the death of their former coach. Magiyane, as he was affectionately known, passed away last Thursday at Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital after having tested positive for COVID-19. The late ‘Magiyane’ mentored ‘Fash’ during his heydays at Mhlambanyatsi Rovers during the year 2004. Other players ‘Magiyane’ coached are Sabelo Mnisi (Young Buffaloes coach), Manzini Wanderers’ Lwazi ‘Shana’ Maziya, and Mbabane Swallows’ Tony ‘TT’ Tsabedze among others.

Shocked

“To say we are still shocked would be an understatement, I mean I last spoke to him during our league game at King Sobhuza II Memorial Stadium about a week ago. He called me but I was with the technical bench team, so we were not allowed to move about to meet others because of COVID-19,” Fash said. “However, I did tell him that we would find time and talk about the issues that he wanted to address with me. I respected him as coach. I am a police officer because of Magiyane. I am his product and he made me to be a better player. He was the best talent scout and that is why Rovers produced a number of players that were recruited by the big teams in the elite league,” he said.

Asked on any advice he took from ‘Magiyane’, the Royal Leopard Technical Director said; “He taught me that there is nothing which comes without hardwork. Generally, I was not a fan of training but he made me realise the importance of training and being disciplined as a player. There are a number of players he groomed and some of them are playing even now. Tony ‘TT’ Tsabedze is one of them,” he added. He went on to say that ‘Magiyane’ was a motivator and he was approachable. Meanwhile, Sabelo Mnisi said he could not explain in words the role ‘Magiyane’ played in moulding him to be the coach he is now. He pointed out that he was passionate about the sport and a natural motivator.
