MBABANE – There was no Chief Ally Kgomongwe’s image on the back window of the Mercedes Benz Sprinter bus.

After social media, particularly Facebook, has been abuzz since last week about the image of Mbabane Highlanders’ director Kgomongwe on the Sprinter he bought for the purposes of transporting the team it has been revealed that initially, the branding was different. Some people took turns in mocking Kgomongwe and Highlanders over the image while others said it was his bus; he could put as many pictures of himself. Kgomongwe said that it was not his plan to have the picture on the bus but nonetheless, it was approved after consulting with his Highlanders management.

“We could have simply gone with our black on the back but I was outvoted and this is what we agreed on for the bus,” he said when questioned about it, especially after it triggered a debate among football fans in the country. Meanwhile, the last time a club in the elite league put its director’s image on its merchandise was when Mbabane Swallows and the entire football fraternity in the country lost Victor ‘Maradona’ Gamedze. Gamedze was shot dead in Ezulwini a few years ago and Swallows honoured him with T-shirts that had his image on the front with the message ‘Myekeleni Aphumule’. Kgomongwe purchased the 22-seater bus last month through a sealed bid auction after its owners, Swallows, could not continue with monthly instalments to settle the balance of E300 000. Nonetheless, Swallows then went on to buy a new Sprinter worth over E900 000.
