MBABANE – Joggers be warned!

As the winter season creeps in, running late in the evening or in the wee hours of the morning may bring more harm than the health benefits. Many joggers think that because they do not carry large sums of money with them as they jog, they are not likely candidates for an attack. Unfortunately, that is not true. Fitness personality and trainer Thami Shongwe from Pigg’s Peak warned joggers to always be aware of their surroundings and take precautions to protect themselves. Shongwe said it was easy to become so focused on the run such that you stop paying attention to what is happening around you. This pre-occupation makes joggers an easy target for an attacker or thief.

“Pigg’s Peak is a forested area and apart from being targeted by robbers there are other hazards such as car accidents. We always run in groups and we don’t leave anyone behind, especially the ladies because they are an easy prey for rapists and thieves,” said Shongwe. Shongwe also narrated that a suspicious man was spotted wondering along one of the forested routes they use for training and word was spread to help other runners.

Warned

Other routes that runners were warned about include the Yithi Abantu Highway leading to Nhlangano, where one lady was reportedly pounced upon by a strange man while jogging at dawn and had to throw herself into the road in front of a car in desperation for help. “The gadgets we use also attract robbers so it’s advisable to conceal them. Ladies are more at risk. Solo runs are not advisable,” said Shongwe.
