TEAMS TO GET 78% OF LIVE-STREAMING FUNDS
MBABANE – Teams will be given the larger share.
It has been reliably gathered that negotiations over the live-streaming platform between the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) and MTN were successful. Information reaching this publication is to the effect that it has been agreed that teams will get the bigger portion as the PLE and teams will share 78 per cent. The arrangement will see MTN Eswatini pocketing the remaining 22 per cent. PLE Chairman Mark Carmichael and MTN Eswatini Senior Manager Consumer Meshack Maseko were both reached and they could only confirm that there will be an official launch next week where all the details of the deal will be revealed. Carmichael said it would be premature to give details now and highlighted that doing so would defeat the purpose of the official launch event next week. “I can’t preempt for now as negotiations are being finalised between involved parties. We have to respect our partners the sponsor as everything will be announced next week during the launch,” he said. Maseko on the other hand said he could only confirm that they had reached a mutually beneficial agreement with PLE. “More details will be availed during the official launch, for now, I can only confirm this,” said Maseko briefly.
Announced
Meanwhile, on December 9, 2020 MTN Chief Executive Officer Wandile Mtshali announced that together with PLE, a digital platform referred to as Yello Hub had been set up to ensure that football fans were able to live-stream league games in the comfort of their homes. This was during the official launch of the 2020/21 MTN Premier League sponsorship at the Convention Centre in Ezulwini where football stakeholders were present. Fans are currently banned from watching football matches live due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The banning of fans at stadiums means teams would therefore have to find alternative methods to generate income as they rely on gate-takings. Live streaming then became the most ideal income generating method or alternative for PLE teams. PLE and MTN have now reportedly finalised the sharing ratio as the launch will be next week as per Carmichael and Maseko’s confirmation.
