THE 3-0 BOYS OF MBABANE!
My dearest readers ...
Those who like to poke fun at the Gooners …er Gunners of London, Arsenal FC, often remark that, at the start of every season of the English Premier League they are always number one. Only because of the alphabetical order. Klikliklikliklikli….You can laugh here too, you son of a gun. I don’t know if one could say the same thing with the country’s arguably most supported side, Mbabane Swallows, who after yesterday’s round of fixtures, returned to the second spot of the MTN log standings. This coming in the aftermath of the Jesus Christ resurrection is unavoidable as the Swallows of Mbabane’s revival after falling from grace – ending two seasons without winning the league title – has been a pain in their posterior. Swallows revival shows a pattern of the ‘Van Damme’ moniker which was attached to their name as they trampled upon every opponent with gay abandon on the way to a remarkable 51-league unbeaten run which began in earnest on May 15, 2016 and ending on the memorable Sunday afternoon of September 30, 2018.
Opponents
Coincidentally it was yesterday’s opponents, Green Mamba, who ended Swallows’ 4 607 minutes of not losing a league match through a former striker, Musa Dlamini’s 17th minute goal on that summer afternoon at Somhlolo National Stadium. Yesterday, Swallows whacked the green and white outfit 3-0 which was the replica scoreline of Friday’s mauling of Milling Hotspurs at the same iconic King Sobhuza II Memorial Stadium. Like a shark drawn blood, the red and white glamour side is fond of anything shiny in the form of silverware. Having last won the MTN league trophy in the 2018/2019 season– the ‘Beautiful Birds’ have last won a trophy with the Ingwenyama Cup in 2018, beating Royal Leopard 2-0 in the final.
Could this be the return of the old swashbuckling Swallows? It is still early days. Yes, only four games have been played so far and some of the top teams like Buffaloes, Leopard and Green Mamba have played one less game but two wins against Milling Hotspurs and Green Mamba after the painful 2-1 loss to Manzini Wanderers in the second game of the season, is worth noting. Before you accuse me of jumping the gun I am not implying that the ‘red and white’ glamour side will go on and win the league but they seem to be hitting form at the right time especially doing so while keeping a clean sheet. This also coincides with the return to the goalposts of Sandile ‘Nkomishi’ Ginindza, who in my humble opinion, is the safest pair of hands in our beautiful kingdom any-day and every-day.
