COMETH THE HOUR, COMETH THE MAN
My dearest readers..........
On Sunday, June 27, 2021, history books will usher in a new Eswatini Football Association (EFA) president, ending a combined 24 year reign of Adam Brightwell Mveli Mthethwa. It will be a watershed moment. It will be the end of an era. After the nomination process was concluded two weeks ago, three names have been thrown into the hat as confirmed by the Ethics Committee. Peter ‘Samora’ Simelane, Mashumi Shongwe and Dr. Comfort Shongwe have all been nominated for the presidential seat and the trio had a rare-as-hen’s-tooth opportunity to tell the world what they intend to do for football a week ago.
One thing became clear, they all believe in football development, commercialising the sport and most importantly capacitating the teams which will in turn lift the performance of the senior national team which has proven to be softer than a muffin on the international stage. The State-of-the-Nation-Sports-Address (SONSA) holds no voting power (how I wish I did!) but if truth be told, we have limited options and this speaks to our lack of a succession plan and most importantly the retrogressive EFA Statutes which doesn’t give us the option to bring in skills from outside the ambit of the football assemblage. Now we have only three people to choose from. Let us look at them closely ahead of the delegates deciding who deserves to be our modern day football Moses to take our football from the bondage of under-achievement, lack of proper development structures to the Land of honey and milk of professionalism and enduring success.
