MBABANE – Eswatini CAF Champions League representatives Royal Leopard will certainly face a strong and determined Zesco United next month.

The nine-time Zambian MTN Super League (FAZ) champions are strengthening their squad and one of the players likely to be in Leopard’s path past the preliminary round is South Sudanese national team captain and defender, Peter Maker Manyang.
He is their third signing and was unveiled by the club on Wednesday. Manyang is 27 years old and is a former Munuki Football Club defender who follows other Zesco signings in Dickson Chapa from Napsa Stars and Edward Lungu from Kitwe United.
According to zescounitedfc.co.zm, he signed a two-year contract subject to completing medicals. “Zesco United are a big football club and a competitive team at continental level. I played against them in 2016 when they reached the CAF Champions League semi-finals. I am extremely delighted to join the club. I have also been an ardent follower of the Zambian game and am aware of the club’s success at domestic level. “I want to make an impact here and contribute to the growth of the team by winning trophies. I have settled in very well. The players have been very friendly and am looking forward to working with everyone,” he said.

Experience

Ahead of their September 10-12 away first leg to Leopard at Mavuso Sports Centre, Zesco’s Technical Chairman, Peter Mutale said; “His vast experience internationally will add great value to the team. He is the current captain of the national team which speaks volumes. We are positive we have the right man to fill the void in our defence.” The head coach, Numba Mumamba, who said last week that they were aiming for the group stage already, from thereon plan for further ground in the tournament, was expected to be delighted about the signings as he had earlier said they needed to sign a defender and two forwards.

Leopard have so far reportedly signed 15-goal forward Wandile ‘Shaka’ Simelane from Tambankulu Callies and were working on having him registered ahead of the August 15 CAF deadline at the time the transfer was reported last week. The second leg will be in Zambia a week after the first leg. The winner will advance to the second preliminary round to play either Angola’s GD Sagrada Esperanca or Zimbabwe’s FC Platinum. Meanwhile, MTN Premier League runners-up to Leopard, Young Buffaloes, will play their equals in Zambia’s Red Arrows in the preliminary round of the TOTAL Energies CAF Confederation Cup next month and if they win after two legs, it will be Angola’s Primero De Agosto next.
