MBABANE – The Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) has an estimate budget of E8 710 000 for the 2021/2022 season.

The income and expenditure budget for the PLE, which was tabled during the organisation’s annual general meeting held on Saturday at Sigwaca House, reflected anticipated costs and funding to cover those costs, for the upcoming season. In the absence of other tournaments, MTN remains the only league sponsor, with a total of E5.44 million in administration fees and prize monies. Match officiating fees income for PLE is estimated at E760 000, while affiliation fees and fines stand at E60 000 and E150 000 respectively.

The PLE anticipates E800 000 COVID-19 Relief Fund from the Eswatini Football Association plus E700 000 financial injection. Premier league additional teams are expected to bring in E200 000, while the MTN Premier League is expected to generate at least E600 000 from ticket sales, TV rights and broadcasting of games. “It is expected that ticket sales will not go up as before in the 2021/2022 season, reason being fans shall be skeptical about the COVID-19 pandemic,” read a note under the proposed budget. The PLE spends E862 860 in salaries for their six employees, E92 000 in capital expenditure for office furniture, lap top and projector. Travelling and accommodation expenses costs budget stands at E50 000 and communication spending is projected to be at E40 000.

The Premier League and National First Division expenses add up to E5 264 000. This includes participation fee, prize money, and referees, playing equipment, costs for stadium representatives and support staff as well as the awards committee and disciplinary committee. “The budget stands to be adjusted. This is only an estimate,” said PLE Chairman Mark Carmichael. Tinyosi Football Club Chairman Polycarp Dlamini advised the PLE to limit costs by considering other cheaper alternatives such as holding virtual meetings in order to eliminate sitting allowances, travelling costs and internet charges.

According to the breakdown of administration costs, the PLE spent E72 000 in sitting allowances with an additional E12 000 allowance for the chairman. The chairman also has E6 000 budget for communication allowance on top of E21 600 for the six members. “We need to half the costs for sitting allowances and meet virtually in order to save costs. Also cut the internet costs of E1 666 per month. We need to look for cheaper alternatives,” said Dlamini. He further advised the PLE to buy a piece of land where they would construct an independent office structure in order to eliminate rent charges. PLE Executive Committee member Charles Matsebula said they were considering other service providers.
