‘SWAZI BOLT’ SETS UP 8-MONTH CAMP IN SA
MBABANE – The journey to glory in the Athletics World Championships and the Commonwealth Games has begun for sprinter Sibusiso ‘Swazi Bolt’ Matsenjwa.
The country’s 100 metres and 200 metres national record holder left the country on Sunday for the High Performance Centre (HPC) in Pretoria, South Africa. He is going for an anticipated eight months training camp in preparations of the two big coming events billed for next year. The Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) Athletics club athlete is expected in training alongside South Africa elite athletes in Akani Simbine and Clarence Munyai among others. He confirmed yesterday that he was still trying to settle in but already work has begun.
Matsenjwa enters the camp after making the country proud in the 2020 Olympic Games, where he reached the semi-finals for the first time and also set two national records in 200 metres. This is his first official training since the heroic performance in August. “I’m settling well here at my base camp in Hatfield. I’m anticipating being here for eight months but at least after 30 days I will be taking a break and visit home. It will be a tough journey but I am here to work hard,” he said.
Matsenjwa got some assistance for the camp from Agri Fuel that will be buying him supplements every month until he leaves for the Commonwealth Games. Life Span will assist him with COVID-19 testing for every competition he will be participating in before the Commonwealth Games. The 2022 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XXII Commonwealth Games or Birmingham 2022, is an international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth that is scheduled for Birmingham, England. The Games are expected to take place between July 28 and August 8, 2022.
Matsenjwa will also compete in the World Athletics Championships. These are biennial athletics competition organised by World Athletics (formerly IAAF, International Association of Athletics Federations). The 2022 World Athletics Championships, the 18th edition of the World Athletics Championships, are scheduled to be held in 2022 in Eugene, Oregon, United States.
