LEOPARD MAY FACE BIG GUNS
MBABANE – Royal Leopard will be among Africa’s giants in the 2021/22 TOTALEnergies CAF Confederation Cup group stage should they make it.
The police ensemble are yet to play their second leg match against Algeria’s JS Kabylie after its postponement from last Sunday due to the new COVID-19 variant, omicron that affected travelling, especially from Southern Africa. Another postponed game was that between Libya’s Al Ittihad against Nigeria’s Enyimba.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is yet to announce new dates for the games but. Leopard are leading 1-0 after their win in the first leg match played at Mavuso Sports Centre just under a fortnight ago. The goal was scored by Thabiso Mokenkoane. Among the 14 teams that have already made it to the group stage which is the last 16 and sees the clubs drawn into groups of four to play in round robin format, home and away before the next stage are South Africa’s Orlando Pirates, DR Congo’s TP Mazembe, Zambia’s Zanaco FC, Egypt Al Masry, Alhy Tripoli and Morocco’s RS Berkane.
Dates
Leopard’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) Frank Hurube said there had been no correspondence from CAF concerning the new dates for the match. “Nothing yet has been said by CAF so far. We are already focusing on our next game against Green Mamba and we are preparing for it. We will wait for CAF to communicate the new date and then take it from there,” he said. The defending champions were held to a goalless draw by Manzini Wanderers on Tuesday in the MTN Premier League game played at King Sobhuza II Memorial Stadium. They are now second on the log since Mbabane Highlanders beat Green Mamba 4-2 over the weekend and went one game ahead.
However, that did not help Leopard as the match was a share of the spoils and after five matches apiece, it is Highlanders on top with 13 points while they sit on second with same points but short on goal difference. Leopard will face Correctional Services side Green Mamba on Saturday at Prince of Wales Sports Ground in Week Six of the games.
