BOYDEN TO UNVEIL QUEEN’S BATON TODAY
MBABANE – The much-awaited unveiling of the Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton is today at the Mountain Inn Hotel.
The baton arrived yesterday through a courier from Namibia and safely landed in the country, at the Eswatini Olympics Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) offices at Lobamba to be precise. The main moment will be when it is officially unveiled by the British High Commissioner Simon Boyden in the Mbabane-based hotel. This was confirmed by EOCGA CEO Maxwell Jele yesterday. “Well, it is true that the baton has arrived through a courier and it is safe in our office. It is waiting for the unveiling tomorrow (today) by the High Commissioner to Eswatini, His Excellency Simon Boyden,” Jele said.
He then disclosed that the event will start at 4pm at the hotel. “There will be a baton handover in the library at Mountain Inn. The event will take about two hours,” he said. The baton would proceed to Bulembu tomorrow. “The entourage will leave with the baton to Bulembu at 8:30am, where there would be activities for about 1 hour 30 minutes before the British high commissioner hosts a cocktail-party at the Royal Villas,” he said. On Saturday, a courtesy call to the Prime Minister, Cleopas Dlamini, will be hosted before 11am for another moment of celebration for the Queen’s Baton. “It would then proceed to Gables, Ezulwini to OlympAfrica Centre from 11:15am. There would a hive of activity where the baton will be paraded before it departs for Lesotho on Sunday.”
