EX-‘BIRD’ TAKES A BREAK, NOW A BARBER
MBABANE – Former Mbabane Swallows Ghanaian defender Richard Sewu has taken a break from football to concentrate on his business.
The player is currently in the books of MTN National First Division side Mbabane Citizens as he joined them about three seasons ago, after being deemed surplus to requirement at Mbabane Swallows. Sewu said a knee injury, which has taken a long time to heal, also influenced his decision to temporarily put a pause in his football career. He was part of the Swallows that made history by becoming the first Eswatini team to reach both the TotalEnergies Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League and Confederation Cup.
“I have taken a break from football to concentrate on my business and to give myself adequate time to fully recover from my knee injury,” Sewu said. The Ghanaian player is now a professional barber running a barber shop in the Capital city along Gwamile Street.
Business
“I have relocated from Msunduza to the city and I am happy about my progress in the business. My life is more important than soccer and I will return to top flight football after I have healed fully,” Sewu said. He said he was still young and had many more years to offer in football as his main dream was to represent his country at senior level. He also said the decision to stop playing came after the game against Ludzeludze Killers, where he lasted for 18 minutes into the field. “I felt an unbearable pain and my knee was swelling, I took pictures of it and sent them to the chairman Mandla Simelane, who promised to buy me painkillers,” he said.
Mbabane Citizens Chairman Mandla Simelane said he was aware that the player was troubled by a knee injury, which saw him play less than 20 minutes in the last game he played for the side. Sewu is the second former Mbabane Swallows player to venture into business after South African-born defender Paito Dube, who started a grass cutting business back in South Africa. He then said anyone, who wanted the best hair cutter in town should contact him on 7919 1182.
