MANZINI CITY TO ADD CYCLING LANES
MANZINI – After witnessing over 50 cyclists sweat it out from Malagwane down to the hub of the country, the Municipal Council of Manzini has big plans for the sport of cycling.
Councillor Quinton Els said in the face of the continuing ozone depletion as a result of carbon emissions, they envisioned a city where cycling to and from work will be the preferred mode of transport as opposed to the use of vehicles.

He made these comments during the Border2Border Cycle Tour which started at Ngwenya Border Gate and ended at Lavumisa Border Gate this past Saturday. “We would have made a great contribution in the fight against climate change, so don’t be surprised in the near future when you learn that the Manzini Municipality is adding cycling lanes on the city’s streets,” said Quinton. He also highlighted that they were believers in the health benefits of cycling. “Cycling helps one to one gain increased cardiovascular fitness; decreases stress levels; and most importantly, decreases body fat levels. All of this contributes to human health and well-being. That is why we get excited when we see residents of our city cycling on our streets. We actually encourage more and more to do so,” he said.
He also highlighted that as a municipality they were firm believers in sport tourism being a driver of the economy. “Our strategic direction is to tap into this aspect of tourism; not only to drive tourism but also to market our city. That is the reason we have partnered with Eswatini Tourism Authority (ETA),” he said. He also recognised cyclists who had travelled all the way from beyond the country’s borders to join the ride.
