ANOTHER BLOW FOR SWIMMER SIMANGA
MBABANE – Top swimmer Simanga Dlamini has missed out on a semifinal spot in the ongoing Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
After an upset in the 50 metres Butterfly this past Friday when he finished third, Dlamini was back in the pool yesterday for his second event. He competed in the 100 metres Butterfly yesterday, but his time of 01:04:99 minutes in his heat was not enough for a semifinal spot. He was second overall in a three-man heat featuring swimmers from Maldives and Gibraltar.

Balloqui from Gibraltar was the winner of the heat with a time of 57.98 seconds, but his time was also not enough to earn him a place in the semis. The top 16 swimmers to progress to the semifinals were those who clocked 54:06 seconds or better in their heats.The fastest time in the heats was 51:36 seconds and it was clocked by Joshua Edwards from Canada. Coach Welcome Nhlabatsi could not be drawn for comment at the time of compiling this report. As the games gain momentum, more Eswatini athletes will be in the spotlight. Today marks the start of the athletics heats and athletes, led by the impressive duo of Sibusiso ‘Swazi Bolt’ Matsenjwa and Bongiwe Mahlalela, are among the competitors. The starting lists were yet to be released at the time of compiling this report. Also in Birmingham are top cyclists Muzi Shabangu and Kwanele Jele, who are expected to endure a road race from 12pm Eswatini time on Thursday.
