‘TARIBO’ FLIES WITH MTN MASTERS TITLE
MBABANE – He plays sports for fun.
That is former Mbabane Swallows striker Mfanafuthi ‘Taribo’ Bhembe, who was the winner of the latest edition of the MTN Masters tournament. Bhembe scored 36 points, winning on a count back to beat second-placed James Mabundza. “This is my first ever win in this tournament, so I’m excited I finally grabbed this one playing alongside the president who was last week’s champion. I knew that if I played to beat him, I would be in good contention,” said Bhembe.
He said playing from the front tees was not easy and the wind just made the day hard. “I played my last nine good to win it from three more scores. I am also happy to be back playing golf after some time away,” he said. This was a ‘catch-up’ round, following a late start in the competition. The MTN Eswatini-sponsored tournament started late in March. In previous years, the tournament normally started in January. Coming third was last week’s runner-up Macdonald Lelaka, who also played 36 and was followed by Mzamo Dlamini also on 36 points.
Shinning in the novelties was Nixon Dlamini who took home the nearest pin 2/11, while Rasheed Mohammed walked away with the nearest pin 8/17 award. Taking home the longest drive in the male section was Lawrence Wakie while Phumlile Zwane shone in the women’s category.
The results were released by Mbabane Golf Club Captain Fisiwe Vilane. The first edition was won by Rasheed Mohammed. Albert Mhlanga was the last man standing in the February and May edition, while Mbabane City Council CEO Gideon Mhlongo took home the March edition, then former Mbabane Swallows legend Cosmo Mthethwa was the champion of the April edition.
