EZULWINI – Female referee Letticia Viena is making history.

Having been the first female referee in the local elite football, she continues to reach for the stars. She will be among the panel of referees to officiate in the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) section of the FIFA Under-17 Women World Cup to be held in India in October. Speaking during an Ordinary General Assembly at the Happy Valley Hotel in Ezulwini yesterday, Eswatini Football Association (EFA) President Peter ‘Samora’ Simelane said this showed the growth of refereeing in the country.

Viena is from officiating in the 2022 Women African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) held in Morocco. “This is an inspiration, a drive and confidence booster to the rest of the refereeing contingent that it is possible to get to the pinnacle of the game. We have witnessed the very first graduation of two women in the women Leadership Programme as we seek to empower the women folk to discharge their leadership responsibilities proficiently,” he said. Simelane said they would continue in the coming year as they wanted to have more women registered for the second edition of the programme.
