AVOID ‘SUGAR MAMAS’, ‘MZORO’ WARNS
MBABANE – Dating older women and reckless behaviour destroys football players’ careers.
Royal Leopard FC skipper and national team player Muzi ‘Mzoro’ Dlamini has cautioned young football players against dating older women and overindulging in alcoholic beverages. Dlamini said dating older women, known as ‘sugar mamas’; imbibing alcohol and smoking any form of drug were a perfect recipe for destroying football talent. Dlamini made this bold statement on his social media page, Facebook, on Sunday morning and further maintained his stance in a formal interview with this publication. The ‘Ingwemabalabala’ winger publicly condemned older women who ‘preyed’ on young boys, who are lured by money and flashy lifestyles. He made a specific reference to players who are in their early 20s and already starting to shine in the Premier League or at national team level.
When asked if this warning was drawn from his personal past experiences, Dlamini jumped to distance himself from what he labelled as ‘self-destructive behaviour’, saying he neither smoked nor drank alcohol or ever dated anyone above his age. “I wrote this post on Sunday because it’s heartbreaking to see old women getting involved with young boys who have just begun their career in football. This is not new in football and looking at the trend of players who have fallen for these ‘sugar mamas’, who give them money and buy them alcohol, they lose their spark within two or three seasons at most. I’m not only blaming the young boys for falling into this trap, but these adults who go all out to destroy young talent,” Dlamini said.
discipline
‘Mzoro’ added that the lack of self-discipline derailed football development in the country and limited the pool of fresh legged players, who ought to fill in the void left behind by retired players. “I once tasted alcohol but decided to stop because I realised that it was bad for me and my career as a football player. I was fortunate and privileged to play alongside legendary players the likes of Tony ‘TT’ Tsabedze, and Wonder ‘Samba Jive’ Nhleko who are still excelling. I learnt the importance of respect for self and others,” Dlamini said. The former Mbabane Highlanders star, however, acknowledged some international football players who through self-discipline, respect and focus on their future goals were continuing to be successful despite their involvement with older women. These include former Manchester United and Inter Milan striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic who married Helena Seger who is 12 years older; Sergio Ramos and Pilar Rubio, who were born eight years apart; and 32-year-old Spanish international Gerard Pique and 41-year-old Colombian American singer Shakira.
