EX-FA BOSS KUNENE DIES

MBABANE –The cruel hands of death have plucked out another feather in the local football nest.

Former Eswatini Football Association (EFA) President Patrick Kunene has succumbed to an undisclosed sickness.  It was gathered that he passed on around 2pm on Saturday. A close relative to the deceased, who was identified as Khumalo, confirmed the passing on of the seasoned football administrator, saying he was sick for a long time.

Kunene will be remembered for having the shortest reign in the history of the local game as chief of the football mother body between 2001 and 2003. He had won the elections ahead of Adam ‘Bomber’ Mthethwa through the toss of a coin back on June 3, 2001, only to be removed from office through a vote of no confidence. Since disappearing from the spotlight, Kunene had been actively involved in the administration of football in the Manzini Region, where he was in charge of a football third-tier (Super League) side styled Nsuka United. Officials from the side could not comment pending a meeting with the family.

While social media was abuzz with the news of his demise from early yesterday, EFA Marketing and Communications Officer Muzi Radebe and newly-elected Manzini Regional Football Association (MRFA) Chairman Vusi Hall said they were yet to learn about the latest developments. Kunene, on the other hand, is the second former EFA president to die after leaving office. On September 28, 2010, erstwhile President Philemon Mkhaliphi passed on in a horrific car crash in Big Bend. Notably, Mkhaliphi had succeeded Kunene.
