SEA BIRDS DENY MAMBA TOP SPOT
MBABANE – Manzini Sea Birds have denied Green Mamba a chance to move to the summit of the MTN Premier League charts.
The Correctional Services side was held to a goalless draw yesterday. However, the draw was enough to dislodge capital city giants, Mbabane Swallows on the second spot. This was Sea Birds’ sixth draw in the season while being the first for Green Mamba. The Ernest Mavuso-led side is now on 16 points, a point behind leaders Young Buffaloes, while Sea Birds maintained their sixth position with 12 points. Week eight fixtures for all the other teams will be played this coming weekend. This game could have gone either way as it was a game of two halves. The visitors showed dominance over the home side in the first stanza, with a fairly balanced second half, where both teams had fair chances of scoring. Mthunzi Mkhontfo could have drawn first blood for his side just 15 minutes into the game, but saw his shot go wide after he was connected by Colani Dlamini inside the box. Sea Birds captain tried to respond to his call just before the break but the shot went off target.
When referee Wandile Mamba signalled for the breather, the two sides were still firing blanks. Just on the 47th minute of the game, Sabelo ‘Sikhali’ Ndzinisa broke free but he did not find target. Sea Birds who were fresh from last Sunday’s controversial win over Mbabane Highlanders introduced Linda Maphalala for Innocent Dlamini just after the hour mark to put more firepower in their attack. These changes almost paid dividends in the 75th and 77th minute, but Mthokozisi Gwebu saw both his efforts go wide. Xolani Gama was also called off to stretch his muscle six minutes from time but Muzi Tsabedze’s shot went wide. The game then went for the 90th minute with both sides trying to get a goal.
