‘TARIBO’ RESCUES ATTACKED EX-WANDERERS DEFENDER’S CAREER
MBABANE – “I am now fully recovered, thanks to Taribo.”
The above statement was made by former national team under-23 captain and Manzini Wanderers defender Ayanda ‘Mngoma’ Kunene, who was attacked on his way from Msunduza Sports Ground by unknown people on December 8, 2022. The former under-20 skipper had to spend over a month at the Mbabane Government Hospital after the near fatal attack.
The overlapping left-back was just fresh from signing with Moneni Pirates when the unfortunate career threatening incident happened. He was signed from Mbabane Citizens, but due to the attack, he never kicked a ball in the colours of the ‘Sea Robbers’ of Moneni.
“I’m now fully recovered and I would like to thank some of the elite league players, who have been supporting me and helping me to recover, such as Mbabane Swallows duo of Wonder ‘Samba Jive’ Nhleko and Sizolwethu ‘Nunu’ Shabalala, but my special thanks goes to Mfanafuth ‘Taribo’ Bhembe,” Kunene said.
The former elite league defender, who was celebrating his 27th birthday yesterday, said his former teammate at Wanderers, Bhembe, supported him a lot financially and was paying for his gym fee at a local facility in the city.
“I have already started individual training and attending the gym has helped me a lot, but I’m not yet ready to join any team for now, as I don’t want to rush things,” he said.
He was, however, quick to say he would gladly welcome a team that would allow him to train with them and after assessing him, they could sign him in the 2023/24 season. Mngoma further said that his wish was to represent the senior national team, Sihlangu, having played and captained both the national Under-20 and Under-23 squads.
