MANZINI – Listening to club Managing Director Chief Ally Kgomongwe’s instructions was a smart choice for Mbabane Highlanders, who claimed a 2-1 victory over sworn rivals Mbabane Swallows.

This was during a feisty Mbabane derby played on Saturday afternoon at Mavuso Sports Centre. The South Africa-born director decided to pat himself on the back for laying out the guidelines to a winning strategy and further commended the players for taking his instructions during the big derby preparations last week. The intensity of the match ahead called for Kgomongwe to rope in football experts who laid out the foundation and execution plan of the ‘Umkhonto Kashaka’ red and white city giants. Noteworthy, Highlanders had a full camp in South Africa ahead of the match. “We made a good preparation with the experts of football who were there and trained the boys. I showed them the pattern to play and they followed my instructions,” Kgomongwe said.

Highlanders edged Swallows 1-0 in last season’s first round match but ended the season with a goalless draw. Beforehand, the black and white side failed to beat Swallows in three meetings, following the latter’s 3-1 victory in 2018. Swallows dominated Highlanders for the entire 2017/18 season. For Coach Dumisani ‘DU’ Makhanya who went into the game walking on thin ice and threatened to be replaced by a foreign coach as reported earlier and confirmed by Kgomongwe, the win last Saturday was a sigh of relief . However, Kgomongwe still persisted on his bid  to scout for a foreign coach to take over the steering wheel from Makhanya. “I’m still going to look for a new coach, but for now I think we are okay with Makhanya because today, he listened to my instructions,” Kgomongwe said.

This weekend, Highlanders will be hoping to win three points against Green Mamba, where Sabelo ‘Sikhali’ Ndzinisa will be expected to face his former employers. The match will be played at KaLanga Technical Centre on Friday, while the vengeful Swallows will return to Mavuso Sports Centre with intent to inflict pain on Manzini Wanderers who played a 2-2 draw with Nsingizini Hotspurs.
