STADIUM 974 DREAM IN LIMBO
MBABANE – Hope does not kill.
This adage serves right, for the country that had high hopes to inherit Qatar’s Stadium 974. The innovative stadium was made of recyclable 974 shipping containers, as it was said that it would be dismounted and donated to one of the developing countries such as Eswatini. Currently, it appears that there are slim chances of the country owning the 44 089-seater stadium, as per the international media. British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) had said there appeared to be no decision made on the future of the stadium, on its future use or location. “We could identify no specific plans showing where the stadium will be moved, if at all. There are reports that Stadium 974 could be sent to Uruguay, which is set to be part of the joint bid with Argentina, Chile and Paraguay for 2030 World Cup,” read an extract from a BBC article.
Development
Meanwhile, Qatar 2022, an online website, has suggested that the containers and the superstructure will be used to construct a waterfront development facility and dynamic hub for the local community, to ensure an everlasting legacy of the structure as its physical structure was temporary. The dismountable stadium was located in Ras Abu Aboud region of Doha. Given the chance to inherit the stadium, Eswatini stadium woes could have been history. The stadium could host the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Category ‘A’ games. Eswatini is currently among 23 African nations that have some stadiums banned from host major international matches. Stadium 974 would be largest stadium as Somhlolo National Stadium is a 7 500-seater.
