4 MEN ATTACK REF NKOMO
MBABANE – Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Referee Musa Nkomo has opened an assault case after being attacked by a group of men at Logoba, Matsapha on Monday afternoon.
It has been gathered that Nkomo, was attacked by four mean-looking men while at Logoba. One suspect has been arrested in connection with the assault.“He was assaulted by a group of about four men, purportedly aggrieved over refereeing that has been not familiar with the supporters as they are said to have told him he was one of the referees in the country that was officiating badly in the games. He was wearing a FIFA sweater, which might have made the supporters to easily recognise him,” said a source.
A source close to the matter claimed everything happened fast. “Some people around intervened and managed to rescue him before he was taken to hospital,” the source said. While it could not be gathered which team’s fans they were, Nkomo has not officiated in any of the MTN Premier League for the past two months and the reason for that remains unknown. It is expected that the assailants appear before the Manzini Magistrate’s Court soon, as police were continuing with investigations especially because three of the suspects are on the run.
Meanwhile, Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati was reached but promised to return with information. She was called again just before 5pm but there was still no official confirmation from her. The referee was also called but asked not to comment on the matter.
