MBABANE – Green Mamba deadly striker Sabelo ‘Sikhali’ Ndzinisa is now the highest paid player in the MTN Premier League.

According to impeccable sources, the former Mbabane Highlanders striker earns a monthly salary of E20 000, which is E3 000 more than the E17 000 a month he was getting at Highlanders. ‘Sikhali’, as the Green Mamba marksman is fondly known, joined the Correctional Services side at the start of the MTN Premier League season after Mbabane Swallows, Young  Buffaloes and Royal Leopard all wanted to sign him in August, last year. He also received a signing-on fee of over E150 000 upon signing for the Ernest Mavuso-led charges. The player has proved to be a great catch for the Green Mamba side currently sitting on position two on the charts and two points behind log leaders Young Buffaloes. “These figures I get from the teams as I work closely with them. ‘Sikhali’ is the highest paid player in the country,” said our source.

Swallows attacking midfielder Felix ‘Fela’ Badernhorst has since been relegated to the second spot. He is reportedly earning E17 500 a month at the capital city giants. ‘Fela’ joined the ‘Birds’ from the now defunct Mbombela United over a year ago. He also received a E100 000 signing-on fee upon rejoining the red and white ensemble late last year. The former TS Galaxy player is currently having a good season with nine league goals and one goal behind Njabulo Maziya of Madlenya FC, who is currently leading the goalscorers’ chart going into week 12. Tied on the third spot on the list of highest paid players are Mbabane Swallows’ Banele ‘Pupu’ Sikhondze, Tony ‘TT’ Tsabedze and Mbabane Highlanders’ Bonginkosi ‘Manyovu’ Dlamini, who are all on E15 000 monthly salaries.

Back in October 2021, this publication had reported that Badenhorst was the highest paid player at the time in the MTN Premier League. The second highest paid back then was ‘Sikhali’ who was earning E17 000 per month.  Former Royal Leopard striker Thabiso Mokenkoane had also appeared in the 2021 top earners’ list with a salary of E12 500 and he was closely followed by another former Highlanders player Xolani ‘Papi’ Sikhondze (now with Swallows) on E12 000. Some of the randomly interviewed players were reluctant to comment on grounds that salaries issues were between the employer and employee. This publication had made it known that their salaries was a matter of public interest.

Meanwhile, in the world;  the highest paid player is Cristiano Ronaldo, who recently completed a move to Saudi Arabia side, Al Nassr and the Portuguese forward receives  a staggering salary of E303 940 000 per month. Experts, on the other hand, say footballers are paid so much because the demand for talented football players is high, as they increase the team’s chances of winning titles.
