MBABANE – Swim Lab’s swimmer Hayley Hoy was crowned the best individual performer during the Barracuda invitation gala held in Mozambique over the past weekend.

Hoy was among the 17-member team that travelled to Mozambique upon invitation and participation was open to all Swim Lab Club’s members. The high-performing team brought home a total of 30 medals. Hoy earned four individual gold medals plus one freestyle gold medal and one silver medley relay alongside Tiano Fraser, Damien De Sousa and S’wakhile Dlamini.
That made her the highest achiever in the overall competition, as she also broke a record in the 100 metre butterfly. The 14 year-old swimmer congratulated her team for this achievement which also helped them to guage their performance.

“The tournament was a really amazing experience where we got to compete with different people and make friends.  We were able to judge from our performance level in terms of fitness and readiness for bigger competitions. We are proud to bring back medals and to have won our freestyle relay as it was our first time with a relay team. We were also happy with silver in the 200 metres medley relay as it was our first time competing in that category too,” Hoy said. Swim Lab Coach Welcome Nhlabatsi said the high level of competition was a much-needed experience for his team. “It was good competing against good clubs of Maputo. We managed to win 30 medals and for the first time we had  two mixed relays and got gold and silver. Some of my swimmers did not get a podium finish but gave a splendid performance with good times. We took young swimmers aged eight and nine and  they did not disappoint. We even went to an extent of breaking competition records by Luca and Hayley Hoy,” Nhlabatsi said. Swim Lab anticipates to compete in more competitions outside the country this month.
