MBABANE – Dream come true.

This is the feeling that best describes Eswatini boxer Thabiso Dlamini after meeting his hero Roy Jones, who is a former professional boxer. Dlamini met Jones in Morocco during the Golden Belt Series which was taking place there. The boxer mentioned that Jones, who retired in 2018 after dropping down to cruiserweight, was his role model and was very happy to finally meet him. “I was fortunate enough to meet Roy Jones who is my role model in boxing and was able to get his contacts. Meeting him has made me want to continue working hard and has motivated me to want to reach for the stars,” he said.

Grade

Dlamini, who represented Eswatini in the Tokyo Olympics early last year but  could not make the grade, was in the north African country to compete in the Golden Belt Series which was his first fight of the year. Roy Levesta Jones Jr. was born on January 16, 1969 and is an American former professional boxer who holds dual American and Russian citizenship.

Jones is considered by many to be one of the greatest boxers of all time, pound for pound, and left his mark in the sport’s history when he won the WBA heavyweight title in 2003, becoming the first former middleweight champion to win a heavyweight title in 106 years.

Muhammad Ali is regarded by many as the greatest boxer off all time and was not only one of the best heavyweights of all time; he was also one of the most colourful boxers. He won the gold medal at the 1960 Olympics and went on to become the first boxer to win the heavyweight title three times.
