NHLANGANO – It is now all about the title race, as Rangers are MTN National First Division (NFD) first round champions.

They were yesterday  awarded with the E50 000 ‘carrot’ after they brushed aside Sisonke 2-1  in a tough decider to shake off Ezulwini United in race for the first round honours. Rangers who are under the mentorship  of the experienced gaffer, Mthunzi Ginindza, are at the summit of the log standing with 31points, one point above their first round target. It will now be the race to win the E180 000 grand prize and gaining promotion to the top tier league, as the second round is set to begin in the next attraction.

However, it was not a stroll in the park for the Shiselweni-based  side as Sisonke proved to be a hard nut to crack. They were one goal ahead as early as two minutes into the game benefitting from an own goal from Simo Mntshali. Rangers were quick to react and levelled matters. Mzwandile Bhembe beat his marker inside the box to keep the incentive hopes alive,  as a draw was enough to earn them the prize.

The visitors were mostly defensive in their approach of the game, relying on counter attacks, which did not reward them on the day. Rangers dominated the game, enjoying much of the ball possession  and from countless opportunities they created. Sisonke goalkeeper Thembelihle Malaza was impressive in office, making crucial saves that maintained a low deficit, while Rangers relied on the disciplined solid defence to hold on until the end of regular time.
