MBABANE – Swim Lab swimmers brought home 11 medals from  the Tuberous International Gala, which was held in Maputo, Mozambique over the weekend.

The team of nine swimmers left the country on Friday for the international assignment, but had to leave early on Sunday to avoid travelling at night due to poor roads on that side of the world. This was confirmed by Coach Welcome Nhlabatsi, who said his team would have brought more than the 11 medals had they participated in all the events. It was swimming sensation Hayley Hoy who was the outstanding, as she brought home three gold and two silver medals.

Nhlabatsi said they also missed some of their top swimmers for the international gala in Mozambique. Those left behind included the likes of Luca Fraser, Tiano Fraser, Damien De Sousa as well as Raya Young. He also highlighted that while they were in Maputo, Coaches Simiso Simelane and Baphelele Masilela were in charge of the team which participated in the Eswatini Swimming Association (ESA) Gala at Enjabulweni.

“Our target is to reach 100 competitive swimmers and we are on the right track and soon we will meet our goal. This showed that we’re a big club as we competed on both galas,” Nhlabatsi revealed. He also said he was very proud of both teams as they had once again made Swim Lab and the entire nation proud for the medals that the swimmers brought home.

Meanwhile, the swimmers who were left behind participated in the ESA Gala and they were able to collect a total of 33 medals. They came second after Wave Aquatics, which collected 41 medals. Coming third was Splash Swinning Club with 20 medals.
