SIHLANGU EARN VALUABLE AWAY POINT
MBABANE – Gallant Sihlangu held Cape Verde in a goalless draw in the 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers away in a game played at Pele Stadium yesterday.
The Dominic Kunene-led side came to this game still licking the wounds that were inflicted by Burkina Faso last year June in a home match played in South Africa. They were beaten 3-1 while they also played a draw against Togo. Sihlangu are winless in all the three games played so far in the qualifiers and they have two points to show, while Cape Verde secured a 2-0 victory over Togo and they came to this game occupying the second spot with Eswatini on third. Eswatini has a chance to fight for the much-needed win on Tuesday afternoon in the second leg.The match is set for Mbombela Stadium in South Africa.
The host dominated the match from the first whistle as they created good scoring opportunities, which they failed to convert into goals. The first shot at goal for the match came a minute before the quarter-hour mark through Bebe, whose direct free kick went wide. The visitors failed to make meaningful attempt at goal as the game went for the breather with the score at 0-0. The second half saw Eswatini coming back into the game, but never threatened going forward and the match was now evenly balanced. The Blue Sharks kept on attacking Sihlangu, but the visitors defended well.
The home team’s search for a goal proved futile as Sihlangu stood their ground and both teams shared the spoils. This result will be a morale boost for the local lads going to the next match.
Enhance
The point will enhance Sihlangu’s slim chances of making a maiden appearance in the continent main football showpiece to be played next year in Ivory Coast as they sit on the third spot. Sihlangu are on four points.Burkina Faso were playing bottom of the log Togo at 9pm yesterday.
