SOME MPS FEEL DE-CAMPAIGNED BY SHUKUMA
MBABANE – Some Members of Parliament (MPs) are not keen on hosting ‘Shukuma’ at their tinkhundla centres, as they feel it has a limited budget.
Shukuma Eswatini is a programme of the Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council (ESRC), which aims at promoting healthy living in the country, through sports and physical activity. However, the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs has stated that some parliamentarians are still shy to embrace the Shukuma outreach programme. The ministry made this revelation in a list of responses to legislators in Parliament pertaining to the criterion used to select areas for hosting the Shukuma programme. Among the concerned MPs were Ndzingeni MP Lutfo Dlamini and his Sithobelweni counterpart Bhekitje Dlamini.
“At first, it was a regional rotation basis and a schedule was drawn. However, later on hosting was given to MPs willing to host this event, otherwise some did not want Shukuma as they claim that limited budget was de-campaigning them,” responded the ministry. These responses are related to the government’s year under review, which ends today. The Shukuma programme is one of the initiatives of the ministry, through ESRC, steers sport development in the country. The ministry also noted a successful implementation of the programme under the elapsing government financial year where there were seven major outreach activities.
