MHLUME – As Young Buffaloes have dropped points, Green Mamba can now smell their third MTN Premier League title.

With a game to spare,  the Correctional Services side survived a scare, coming from a goal down to grind, a 2-1 victory against Denver Sundowns. Goals from second half substitute Njabulo Tfwala and Njabulo Magagula ensured that they marched closer to the E1 million first prize. A draw against Royal Leopard will be enough to clinch the title. Sundowns converted as early as the sixth minute through the spot kick via the boot of Alvin Shabashie.

it was Green Mamba who desperately needed all three points yesterday, with Sundowns playing for pride as they are languishing in mid-table. However, they benefitted from a penalty as early as the fifth minute into play after Siphamamandla Maseko was floored by Green Mamba’s shot stopper Xolani Gama inside the box unmarked. Shabashie stood tall for the visitors and slotted home the lone goal for the visitors. It was a punch that took the Correctional Services side the whole first stanza to fix despite Sundowns giving the ball to express themselves.
Green Mamba pressed hard on the visitors, forcing them to seat back and relied on counter attacks in the first half but lacked cutting-edge over them. Sundowns almost worsened the matter just a minute after the first half-hour mark, with Melusi Ncongwane, whose shot rested comfortably in Xolani Gama’s chest.

Despite making heavy pounding on Sundowns defence, the log leaders were unable to convert their fortunes in the first half, which saw Njabulo ‘D4D’ Ndlovu almost neutralising the score four minutes before the break. It was in the 55th minute that Green Mamba’s prayers were answered. Njabulo Tfwala reignited the title hopes through a tap-in after benefitting from Mbutfo Mamba’s pass. Sundowns’ resilience had died, especially in midfield, where the host managed to win most of the balls.

They employed time delaying tactics and were almost punished for that  in the 73rd minute. Mthunzi ‘Xavi’ Mkhontfo was in disbelief when he watched his shot went wide with an empty net. They went on to maximise their effort to get the winner, but Bernard Armah stood in their way to delay their last laugh on the day. It was the impressive and then man of the Match Njabulo ‘Magwegwe’ Magagula’s stunning volley outside the box, three minutes before Thulani Sibandze’s stoppage time that extended their title chances. A minute later, Sabelo ‘Sikhali’ Ndzinisa  was ruled out for offside in the 88th minute. At the end, Green Mamba had the last laugh.
