WESLIANS BATTLING FOR 2ND SPOT
MBABANE – “We are now fighting to finish the season as runners-up.”
This was said by Manzini Wanderers Ladies Team Chairman Mduduzi Maseko during a pre-match briefing which was held at Sigwaca House yesterday, ahead of their Eswatini Women Football League (EWFL) game against Mbabane Swallows. The game is billed for the Eqinisweni Sports Ground in Matsapha on Sunday.
The chairman of Izi girls, as the Wanderers women soccer team are fondly known in local football circles, said preparations for the game were going according to their plans as they wanted all the points at stake this time around for them to finish the league in second place. “Swallows are a tough side to play against as we drew in the first round, but this time around it is going to be a different ball game as we want to win so that we can finish on position two,” Maseko said.
He also said the team had improved a lot from last season, where they finished the 2021/22 EWFL season on position six after most of the championship squad which represented the country in the inaugural TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League/COSAFA Qualifiers left the club. He highlighted that this season the team was competing; however, he said they would now finish as the second best as Young Buffaloes were already the champions.
Meanwhile, Mbabane Swallows Ladies team’s gaffer Fakazile Vilakati also said they were ready to face Wanderers as preparations were going well. She said the team was playing better than the previous season, as she anticipated finishing on the fifth position. Wanderers are on the second position with 44 points, while Swallows are on position five with 38 points in 22 games. The game will be played on Sunday at Eqinisweni Sports Ground starting at 1pm. Meanwhile Swallows Captain Cebsile Shabangu has promised a fight to the end in the season ending enconter.
“We are preparing for Wanderers, we want to win and we don’t promise them any points in this game on Sunday,” she said.
