LINDO’S ZESCO OUT OF CAF
MBABANE - Despite a strong finish, Lindo Mkhonta’s Zesco United will not play in CAF competitions.
Mkhonta’s team failed to break into the top two in the Zambia Premier League. Only two teams qualify to play in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup in the Zambian league. Zesco are left with one game to play before the curtain falls on the league. Even if they win their last game against Forest Rangers, they will finish on 55 points, a point away from qualifying to the CAF second-tier tournament which is usually played for by runners-up.
There two teams that will qualify for CAF competitions. It will be Power Dynamos (league champions) and runners-up FC Muza. Speaking to the Sports Desk, Mkhonta said it was disappointing that they were not going to play in the CAF competitions. “We did not have a good start this season. However, I would like to believe the team did well if you consider that at some point we were on the 12th spot. We tried our best but our competitors were on form,” said Mkhonta.
He, however, said they were looking to do well next season and definitely, assuring that they would qualify next season. Asked on his injury, he said he had started light training. “I will be available for Togo game; I feel better now,” he said. Sihlangu will clash with Togo on June 18 during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The game will be played at Mbombela Stadium and kick-off time is 4pm.
