ADAM IS COSAFA ‘BOMBER-STIC’!
MBABANE – Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe presented Eswatini’s longest-serving football president, Adam ‘Bomber’ Mthethwa with his Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) award.
COSAFA was holding its annual general meeting (AGM), which was graced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe, COSAFA President Autur Almeida e Silva as well as COSAFA Member Associations (MAs) in Sandton, Johannesburg yesterday.
The country was represented by Eswatini Football Association (EFA) President Peter ‘Samora’ Simelane, Vice-President Steve Horton and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Frederick Mngomezulu. Also in attendance was South African Football Association (SAFA) CEO Danny Jordan alongside FIFA Chief Member Association Officer Kenny Jean-Marie.
Mthethwa, who is now Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) President once served as COSAFA Honourary President. The EOCGA leader was once appointed to head the 2010 COSAFA Challenge Bid team. It was tasked to convince Angola to host the COSAFA championships, as SA was preparing to stage the FIFA World Cup. At this time, he was also COSAFA honourary president.
This year’s edition will commence from July 5-16 with the semi-finals and finals billed for the King Zwelithini Stadium. The 2023 Hollywoodbets COSAFA Cup will be played under a new format of 12 teams to be split into three groups of four clubs each. The former EFA president was among seven dignitaries who were awarded by COSAFA alongside Phillip Chiyangwa, Ashford Mamelodi and Khiba Herbert Mohoanyane, to name a few.
Mthethwa, together with the others were recognised by COSAFA with the prestigious Honourary Vice-President Status, which were presented by Motsepe and Autur Almeida e Silva.
Congratulated
Meanwhile, EFA Vice President Horton confirmed that the erstwhile president was awarded with the honourary award by the regional football mother body. On the other hand, Simelane congratulated his predecessor for the achievement. “We would like to congratulate him as he has done a good job for football in the country as well as in the COSAFA territory. He deserves it,” Simelane said.
However, getting comment from Mthethwa proved futile at the time of compiling this report. EOCGA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Maxwell Jele complimented him and said they were benefitting a lot from his leadership and wisdom. “I would like to extend our congratulations to our Mr Mthethwa for this prestigious recognition from COSAFA. This is a well-deserved award for his outstanding long-term leadership and contribution to football in and outside the country. He brought a lot of stability during his time with the EFA. We are currently benefitting from his leadership and wisdom at EOCGA, which he mastered within the football structures. We are extremely proud of him,” Jele hailed Mthethwa.Mthethwa and Jele will today attend the Africa National Olympic Committees for Africa (ANOCA) Zone VI general assembly in Gaborone.
