LISWATI WINS PALAU MARATHON
MBABANE – He has made the country proud.
This is the story of Eswatini Royal Police Service (REPS) athlete Mancoba Nhlabatsi, who has won the Palau Marathon, which took place yesterday evening in Palau. Palau is an archipelago of over 500 islands, part of the Micronesia Region in the Western Pacific Ocean. Nhlabatsi left the country to compete in the marathon and will return home on June 9. The athlete was sponsored to a tune of about E70 000 by the Taiwan Embassy in Eswatini.
Supreme
Nhlabatsi recently reigned supreme during the second edition of the Voice of the Church (VOC) Half Marathon earlier last month, finishing ahead of the over 200 other athletes who took to the streets to run the 21km. The REPS athlete said he was happy to win the race after preparing for it. He clocked 01:11: 47 seconds. “I’m very happy to win the race after preparing for it. Even though before the start of the race it rained and it was freezing cold but I told myself that I will settle to the condition so that I can make the country proud of me,” he said. The gifted long distance runner was among the athletes who took part in the track and field National Championships 2023 Qualifiers at Mavuso Sports Centre recently. He said he would like to thank the people of Eswatini for supporting him in his journey.
Support
“I would like to thank the people back home for their support and prayers. I know they were with me in mind as I moved from Eswatini throughout the whole trip. I strongly believe in them and I love them, which is why I won’t let them down. I will also like to appreciate Athletics Eswatini and Eswatini Sports and Recreation council for supporting me,” he added. The Palau Marathon winner who will be having a ceremonial day today will return in the country on June 9. He further gave thanks to the Taiwan Embassy, which sponsored him to a tune of about E70 000 . “I would like to send big thanks to the Taiwan Embassy in Eswatini for giving me such an opportunity and making sure that my stay here is well taken care of,” Nhlabatsi said.
The REPS athlete has won the past three races that were staged in the country recently. These are the Ngwenya Half Marathon, Lubombo Marathon and second edition of the VOC Half Marathon.
