MBABANE – The Eswatini National Volleyball Association had the MulaSport sponsored league take centre stage for the females at Coronation Park yesterday, where United Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) struggled.

UEDF, who have not taken part in any of the recent tournaments, were playing catch up to a much experienced Correctional Sunrise. The army side were debutants this year as this was the first game they have played as a team since the beginning of the volleyball calendar events began. However, it is worth mentioning that even with their staggering performance, they had good communication on the court, which gave Correctional Sunrise a run for their money. Both teams were able to keep the ball in the air, completing a rally of 15, before Correctional finally got the upper hand from a good spike.

venue changed

The ladies had their venue changed as the fixtures were billed for Lobamba, OlympAfrica Sports Centre, where they had a change of atmosphere. Mbabane, which is a generally cold area in Eswatini as it is in the Highveld saw teams take a few extra minutes to conduct thorough warm ups. Bob Ladies were up first in court A, against Phoenix in their opening fixture. Bob ladies served first to a much displaced Phoenix, who had a hard time returning some of the serves coming from the Bob Ladies camp. Phoenix eventually found their footing well in the first set. Bob Ladies had already inflicted some damage, but it was still repairable damage as far as Phoenix were concerned.

The latter regrouped very well in the first set as they took a surprising lead to win the set 24-16. This put immense pressure on Bob Ladies, who were taken aback by the set they had just lost. They applied a few tactics that got their mood rolling as they showed more life on the court. The first few serves had Bob Ladies leading the second set 6-1, which their counter parts eventually closed in on. Bob Ladies continued to show resilience to take matters to level terms, which was needed as they were playing best of three sets. Bob Ladies eventually took things to level terms, which meant that they had to playing a deciding set, which Bob Ladies went on to win 25-14 and winning the overall game 2-1. Ace Angels went up against RES in a fairly balanced game, where both sides needed the deciding set to determine the winners. While they were playing the deciding set, Ace Angels had five points to win the game, which RES took into account. RES caught up with the Angels and took the set right out of Ace Angel’s hands to a score of 2-1, beating them 25-24 in the deciding set.
