MBABANE - Just two years into volleyball, she is undoubtedly one of the rising stars and a name to watch out for in the near future.

Nonhlanhla ‘Nono’ Maseko is a former netball player but now emerging volleyball star. Standing tall at 173cm, she dominates the volleyball court with her powerful spikes and blocks. Behind her intimidating physique lies a humble and hardworking athlete who has risen from obscurity to become one of the best power attackers (PA) in the Royal Eswatini Sugar (RES) Corporation Volleyball Club. Born on June 26, 1997 at Nkambeni, ‘Nono’ started playing volleyball at the age of 23 with RES. She had previously played netball in high school but quit the sport after an ailing knee injury. She found a new home in volleyball later on, courtesy of her trainer Narcha Mahlalela, who has nurtured her as a seasoned and experienced player.

confidence

“I had little confidence, but he trained me, and I also got a warm reception in the team where everybody can grow under the support we get from the coach and teammates. He saw some potential due to my height and definitely I have also fallen in love with the sport,” Nono said. She quickly showed her talent and skill, earning a spot in the starting lineup. Nono has been instrumental in the team, helping RES reach the semi-finals of the inaugural Mulasport Volleyball Tournament, which is a debut feat for the team.“This is history in the making for the team because I was told that the club had not played up to this far in any tournament.

Dream

“As every player’s dream, it is now a matter of helping the team bring home its first silverware,” the 25-year-old said. However, she draws most of her inspiration from overseas star, Turkiye’s 23-year-old Zehra Güneş, who is one of the best middle blockers in the world. Güneş has won numerous medals and awards at both club and national levels. “Zehra has helped her team and national team win medals, why can’t I? I am glad that we are already in the semi-finals, and I am chasing a best performance that could probably earn me a national team call-up,” she added. She is eager to also grow her career capabilities either in Lesotho or Botswana, where volleyball is more popular and competitive than in Eswatini.
