MBABANE – Capital City giants Mbabane Swallows have been invited once again to participate in the 2023 Prince Mangosuthu Legacy Cup, set to take place next month in Kwazulu-Natal.

The pre-season tournament which honours Prince Mangosutho Buthelezi, was first held in 2018 and was won by Sundowns, when they beat AmaZulu FC in the finals. It will feature Umkhonto KaShaka and  three DStv Premiership teams  that include Orlando Pirates  and Amazulu. The latter were recently defeated 2-0 by Swallows in the first edition of the African Day Cup that took place at Harry Gwala Stadium. Justice Figuareido’s new team, Richards Bay will complete the line-up. This was confirmed by the team’s General Manager (GM) Sandile ‘Beyond 2000’ Zwane, who said they had received another invite to play in a pre-season tournament in South Africa on July 29.

Excited

“We are excited to receive another invite from South Africa, which shows that the club is significant in the country and outside of the borders. We welcome and receive the invite to play against top teams in the DStv Premiership. It is a one-day tournament that will take place in Ulundi and we want to thank the president of the club for allowing the team to honour the invite in KZN,” Zwane said. The Swallows manager went on to say that they would prepare for the tournament. “We will definitely do our preparations for the tournament and make our supporters happy.

Love

“We appreciate the love we are getting from South Africa and we would love to thank the Ulundi government together with the South African government for seeing fit that the Swallows brand goes to play teams from the PSL. Swallows are not only the biggest team in the country but also in the African continent and we will continue making the country proud,” he said.

Zwane went on to say that they would be going with many buses this time around, after many supporters showed interest to go to the recent game against Amazulu. “This time around we got the invite earlier which is good for our supporters who will want to travel with the team to South Africa. We will communicate more details about the trip in the coming days,” he added.

The tournament was named after Prince Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi who was born August 27, 1928.Buthelezi  is a South African politician, Zulu prince who is currently a Member of Parliament and a traditional prime minister to the Zulu royal family. Mbabane Swallows were last month invited to participate in the Africa Day cup, where they played against Amazulu at Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg. The Caleb Ngwenya-led charges won the match 2-0, with both goals scored by lanky striker Sandile Hlatjwako.
