TEAM PHYSICIANS LAMENT NON-PAYMENT
MBABANE – Despite all their imperative contributions in the game, most soccer team physicians in the country do not receive even a cent.
Soccer medics or team physicians are in charge of assembling medical equipment which they use when a player is injured. They give important things like water during a match. In soccer, team physicians assist any wounded player who is unable to walk and further provide treatment for any acute musculoskeletal injury.
Meanwhile, local team physicians, more especially those who assist first division and other lower leagues complain that they do not receive any money, despite working tirelessly and with dedication in their work. One of the team physicians, from a National First division team, who preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed that they were not paid even a single cent for their essential roles in clubs.
“It is vastly energy-draining to be dedicated to your work of assisting the team, but at the end of the day, not receive anything as a token of appreciation. In my team, I do not receive even E200 a month. I just tour around the country during games, but do not have even toiletry money, yet I work vigorously for my team,” he lamented. He added, however, that some elite league teams sometimes pay their medics for their services they render to clubs.
Meanwhile, Eswatini Football Association Medical Committee, Welcome Motsa said he was not aware that the soccer medics do not receive any money. He added that issues regarding payments were an employer to employee matter and as a committee, they did not interfere in such. He further revealed that they would address these complaints at their workshop today. “It is painful to hear such challenges, but I think we will address their complaints in our workshop,” he said.
